Momagama Lets Moms Connect

Nidhi Tomar launched Momagama, a hyperlocal online site for mothers living in South Orange, Maplewood and Millburn, because she thought there was a need for a virtual community that celebrates women not only as mothers, but also as individuals.

Since the free membership site kicked off in January, it has garnered about 500 subscribers and 900 Facebook fans, said Tomar. 

Tomar, mother of two and an MBA who worked in finance, explained the word “Momagama” is a combination of 'Mom' and 'agama,' the Buddhist word for sacred work.

"Momagama celebrates [what is] sacred and unique in mom and is all about sharing our experiences, our transitions, and everything fun and fabulous in our daily lives," said Tomar.

The site targets mothers with children up to 12 years old, and provides information on subjects including kids, lifestyle and relationships. There are blogs from local writers, kids and lifestyle directories, interviews with business owners, weekly deals and profiles of local mothers. Members can chat about topics ranging from "What to serve at a party" to "Opinions about preschools" and "Looking for a new Ob/Gyn."

"Our mom members that blog...come from different backgrounds including stay at home moms, mom bloggers, attorneys, personal stylists, authors, therapists, counselors, and more," Tomar said. Blog topics have included mommy blues, parenting, trips with kids and understanding tweens.

Tomar said the site welcomes different viewpoints. Members can join different groups, such as the Family, Divorced/Separated Moms, Same-Sex Moms, Baby Buddies and more. New groups are created based on member suggestions.

Momagama also hosts events where members can meet in person. The site held a well-attended launch party in March at Click Learning Studio in Maplewood Village.

"Momagama is a growing community and its strength is in having more moms join and participate actively," said Tomar.

In the next few months, Tomar said she plans to expand the site to West Orange, Livingston and Morristown.
