Former Maplewood Woman, 102-Years-Old, Passes Away

Former Essex County resident Hilda Schmidt was 102-years-old. She was married to her husband for 73 years.

Former Maplewood resident Hilda Schmidt passed away on Feb. 27.

The following obituary comes courtesy of Bradley and Son Funeral Homes:

“Hilda Schmidt was born December 4, 1913, in Austria. She lived most of her years in Maplewood, NJ, and more recently Mountainside, NJ.

“At a remarkable age of 102, Hilda joined her beloved husband of 73 years, John Schmidt, with the Lord, on February 27, 2016. She was surrounded by loving family.

“Hilda was admired for her strength, wisdom, and compassion. She was a force of positive energy and pureness of heart. She dedicated her time and endless support to her family, opening her heart and home to anyone in need. She enjoyed sharing special time with her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and celebrating life – dancing, listening to music, and playing cards with family and friends.

“Hilda was predeceased by her adoring husband, John, sister Elizabeth Preusse and brother Edward Scholtz, both of NJ and her infant son, Lance. She is survived by her brother Robert Scholtz of Diamond Bar, CA, her two children: Barbara Ray of Mountainside, NJ and John Schmidt and his wife Isabel of Golden, CO. She also leaves behind 4 grandchildren: Donna Schmidt of Sparta, MI; John Schmidt and his wife Jennifer of Flemington, NJ; Yvonne Ray of Manasquan, NJ and Dawn Towle and her husband Brian of Tewksbury, NJ; and 6 great-grandchildren; Kaitlyn Calabro, Richard Calabro, John David Schmidt, Steven Schmidt, Dylan Towle and Luke Towle.

“The family would like to express their warmest gratitude to the nurses and staff of the Atlantic Homecare and Hospice of Morristown for their extraordinary compassion and professionalism.

“In lieu of flowers those wishing may make memorial donations to: Mountainside Rescue Squad, Atlantic Homecare and Hospice, 465 South Street, Morristown, NJ 07960.”
