MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Fifty-eight people were arrested across the state in connection with a multi-state scam involving Santander Bank, prosecutors said. Four of them live in Maplewood, prosecutors said.

Scammers exploited a technical glitch and used prepaid debit cards to withdraw money from ATMs, authorities said. According to the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office, there were reports of fraudulent withdrawals across New York and New Jersey since Tuesday morning.

Mercer County prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri said in a news release on Wednesday that the suspects were charged with conspiracy to commit theft by deception. The suspects were connected through social media.
