Library Quiz Show a Hit for Competitors and Audience

Spirited fundraiser raised $7K to support the library, brought community together.

In honor of Maplewood Memorial Library’s 100th anniversary, The Library Board of Trustees hosted "The Centennial Quiz Show" on May 23 at Columbia High School.

In this community-wide, family friendly game show fundraiser emceed by Maplewood's Mayor Vic DeLuca, over 20 teams comprised of students, members of community organizations and township officials squared off to answer questions about the library, the town and special "One Hundred Years" Wild Card questions.

The event was coordinated by Board President Katherine Hilaire, and Board Treasurer David Heumer created the questions (a study guide was distributed ahead of time.)

First up was the students' round, with four teams including the Girl Scouts, Parteaz, Friends of the Library, the Elizabeth Aaron team. After a spirited several rounds of questions including "What sport was invented by Columbia High School students in 1968?" (Answer: Ultimate Frisbee), the Aaron team took home the trophy.

Adult teams included: Maplewood Garden Club, Realtors team, Meineke, Milo, HK Project/Studio B, the Town Hall Quizettes (township employees), Fire Department, Police Department, Seth Boyden, Township Officials, Maplewood Taxi, Dream Team, Monkey and Friends, Hair Chalet, South Mountain Conservancy, Durand Hedden, Wissel family, Adult School/Puppy Love.

After several nailbiting, tie-breaking rounds, the Township Officials (Township Committeeman Jerry Ryan, Deputy Mayor Kathleen Leventhal, former TC member Ian Grodman and Maplewood's Municipal Court Judge Stanley Varon) triumphed.

Audience members were given the chance to compete as well, with prizes donated by local businesses.

"We raised close to $7,000 but as Katherine Hilaire said, it really was more than a fundraiser as it brought the whole community together with a wonderful spirit of camaraderie," said library director Sarah Lester.  

Platinum donors included Maplewood Country Club, Clawson Architects, Maplewood Family Dental and Investors Bank. "The support from community businesses was tremendous and is very much appreciated," said Lester.
