Maplewood Police Report Rash of Thefts

Maplewood saw a rash of crime last week, including one car stolen and two bicycles taken from the train station, several thefts from vehicles and an attempted daytime robbery of a woman near Orchard Park, according to Sgt. Christopher Black of the Police Department.

In the attempted robbery, two teens tried to grab a cell phone from a Maplewood woman on Parker Ave near Orchard Park at around 5:00 p.m. on June 11, said Black, but the woman was able to ward them off and they ran off on Woodside Road.

A woman on Ohio Street said she had seen a teen in her house on June 14 at 9:45 a.m., Black said. When police arrived, the teen was gone. Police believe the teen entered through a window. Maplewood and Union officers checked the area, but they were unable to find the teen.

A Chrysler Voyager was stolen from in front of a house on Laurel Avenue in the early morning hours of June 14, said Black, and a radio was stolen from an unlocked car parked on Hillcrest Road on the same day.

Black also said that a catalytic converter was taken from a U-Haul truck parked at a business on Newark Way between June 10 and 12.

Residents reported loose change was missing from two unlocked cars on Van Ness Terrace on June 11, Black said, and a wallet and cigarettes were taken from unlocked cars on Henry Pl. and Jacoby Street on June 15.

Locked bicycles were taken from the Maplewood Train Station on the mornings of June 12 and June 17, said Black.

All incidents are currently under investigation by the Detective Bureau. Residents are asked to practice good crime prevention techniques and secure their garages and automobiles when left unattended.
