Maplewood Schools Closed Tuesday; Town Gives Updates

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — As a nor'easter continued to blanket Maplewood and South Orange in snow on Monday, the South Orange-Maplewood schools announced that they would close Tuesday:

"Snow Closing: SOMSD Schools & Offices Are Closed Tues., Feb. 2. Due to the inclement weather conditions, the district will be closed for an official snow day tomorrow, Tuesday, February 2. District offices are also closed and all in-person activities, food distribution, and transportation services are canceled."

The Maplewood Township Committee will meet remotely Tuesday night, but some town offices are closed Tuesday. The town gave this update:

• Due to inclement weather township facilities will be closed on February 2, 2021. Maplewood Police, Fire, and Public Works facilities will be open and operational. Winter storm warning in effect until February 2nd. Additional snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.
• Anyone who experiences a loss of heat in their home should contact Maplewood PD.
• The Maplewood PD’s emergency phone number is 973-762-1234.
• There is no overnight parking on snow covered streets, and we ask residents to move their vehicles as to not impede snow removal operations throughout the storm.
• We also ask residents to not blow or shovel snow into the roadways.
• Tuesday's scheduled recycling pick up will be picked up on Wednesday. We ask that residents place their recycling at the curb and not in street as to not impede snow removal operations.

The National Weather Service said an additional 3 to 5 inches of snow and ice could accumulate Monday night, with winds as high as 45 m.p.h. The storm warning remained in effect into Tuesday morning.
