Millburn And Maplewood Get ADA Grants For Sidewalks, Train Stop

The grants will help make public areas like older buildings, sidewalks, and a train station more accessible.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Maplewood, Millburn, South Orange, and 11 other Essex County municipalities, as well as 34 community groups, will get more than $5 million in federal money through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program and the Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) program.

Among these, several towns will get money to make public areas and buildings more accessible to the disabled. For example:

  • Millburn will get $34,055 for ADA barrier free access to the town's train station.
  • Maplewood will get $164,840 for ADA curb ramps to various sidewalks.
  • South Orange's Baird Community Center will get $102,900 for an elevator to make it more accessible.

Essex County's shelters and agencies will also get money toward programs for the homeless and others. The grant recipients range from Jewish Family Services to Big Brothers & Big Sisters to Planned Parenthood.
