New Programs for Teens Available at South Mountain YMCA

Programs include a day try to Jenkinson's Pier, a babysitting training course and a youth community service club.

The South Mountain YMCA has announced its newest activities for teens, ranging from day trips to skills training.

Teen Trip Saturday, grades 5 - 10

A day trip to Jenkinson’s Pier is available this Saturday for $30. The bus leaves from the YMCA, located at 13 Jefferson Avenue in Maplewood, at 9:30 a.m. and returns promptly at 5 p.m. To register for the trip, please visit the registration page and return the form to the YMCA.

Friday Night Game Night, grades 5-8

There will be two hours of gym games every Friday in the YMCA gym from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Registration is not required. There is a $10 drop-in charge.

American Red Cross Babysitting Course, grades 5-8

This Red Cross-certified training session will teach 11-15 year olds how to properly care for infants and schoolchildren. Participants will learn how to prepare for an emergency, illness, first aid, rescue breathing, appropriate child care, decision-making skills and child development. The session uses videos, activities and hands-on training. Participants will receive a certificate of completion from the American Red Cross at the end of the course. The training session takes place Oct. 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration is required. The fee is $120 for members and $160 for non-members. Please visit the registration page and return the form to the YMCA to attend this event.

Teen Leaders Interact Club, grades 7-12

The teen-service club meets the second and fourth Thursday of every month from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. The group plans monthly service projects around the YMCA and the community. The programs are intended to teach teens to be responsible community leaders. This is a free program. Please contact Tommy Donaldson at tdonaldson@metroymcas.org if your teen is planning on attending. The first meeting took place Sept. 11. The club will meet again Sept. 25.
