MAPLEWOOD, NJ — A spokeswoman has confirmed that the Kings supermarket on Maplewood Avenue in Maplewood will close in December for good. A Kings store in Gillette (in Morris County) and one of the two Kings stores in Hoboken will also shut, she said.

The company that owns Kings filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August and planned to sell its stores to Acme, but as of summer, six stores, including the Maplewood store, were not set to be included in the sale.

Spokeswoman Kim Yorio said this weekend that she doesn't have firm dates for the three closings, "just that they will be within the next two weeks."

She had said that the Hoboken store would temporarily close this Monday and Tuesday for inventory and will reopen with items on sale. She said employees have been offered positions at other stores.

The Village Green reported that according to Maplewood store employees, that market will remain open through at least Dec. 11. Mayor Frank McGehee told the outlet that the town is seeking another grocery store for that location.

Yorio said that two other Kings stores mentioned in past stories about the closings, Warren and Bernardsville, are staying open through at least the new year.
