MATAWAN, NJ — NJ Transit and the town of Matawan are seeking developers to submit proposals to develop a seven-acre plot of land near the Matawan-Aberdeen train station.

The land is owned by NJ Transit and is part of an extensive transit-oriented development project spearheaded by Matawan since 2001.

The vision for this project is to combine moderate- to high-density residential units with retail, office and community spaces to create a vibrant walkable community with easy access to regional amenities and destinations via NJ Transit's rail services.

The area around the Aberdeen-Matawan station has seen significant interest and growth in recent years. Last October, NJ Transit welcomed the opening of The LINK mixed-use development on the Aberdeen side of the station, and Matawan has launched a number of projects on private properties in addition to the station redevelopment plan.

To promote this and other transit-oriented development opportunities on and near NJ Transit properties, NJ Transit has developed a website to host project documents for interested bidders and members of the community. The website, at https://www.njtransitdevelopment.com/, launched last month with the Matawan project’s Request for Qualifications.

Interested developers and builders should visit the site regularly as it will be the prime location for posting of upcoming opportunities to bid on NJ TRANSIT-related development projects.

“I'm excited the first step has been taken toward the redevelopment of the Matawan Train Station,” said Matawan Mayor Joseph Altomonte. “NJ Transit has begun their request for qualifications of interest for the section of property owned by NJ Transit located at the Aberdeen-Matawan Train Station. This project has been a priority of my platform and we are eager to get it moving. We look forward to seeing what ideas will be submitted."

“Matawan’s vision and leadership on this project are critical to its success, and we couldn’t ask for a better partner to foster smart growth connected with public transportation,” said NJ Transit Executive Director Kevin Corbett. “NJ Transit is committed to development projects like this to build sustained economic growth, support our community partners, and increase non-farebox revenue.”

Additionally, last week NJ Transit hosted a packed event at its Newark Headquarters with prime contractors, small businesses and disadvantaged business enterprises (DBEs) to showcase many of the upcoming capital construction projects, as well as opportunities to connect and do business with the agency. Approximately 150 people attended the event to learn about more than $800 million in new contracting opportunities in capital projects becoming available throughout the year.
