Art & Healing, expressions of trauma and gratitude
At the Monmouth Museum March 16 - May 19, 2019

The Monmouth Museum is pleased to present, “Art & Healing: expressions of trauma and gratitude,” March 16- May 19, 2019. This exhibition highlights the role of how the creation of art can be part of the healing and recovery process after a diagnosis of cancer. The painting, sculptures, photography, and mixed media work of the eight artists in this exhibition embody their individual response to their cancer experience. The opening reception is Saturday, March 16th from 5:00 – 7:00 pm, admission is free and open to the public.
As part of the exhibition, each artist tells, in brief statements, how their diagnosis affected their artwork. The Monmouth Museum invites the community-at-large to share the artist’s experience of cancer; an experience that affects one in four people. There will be a panel discussion with the artists on Sunday, April 14 at 2:00 pm.
“Art & Healing” is curated by Karen Starrett, an ovarian cancer survivor and one of the eight artists in the exhibition. The other artists are: Theresa DeSalvio, Shari Epstein, Arlene Mollow, Carol Radsprecher, Bob Rivera, Nisha Sondhe, and June Wilson. All of the artists were engaged in making art long before being diagnosed with cancer. For each, the diagnosis was a life changing experience as individual and unique as their artwork. In “Art & Healing: expressions of trauma and gratitude,” the artists have come together as a relevant voice expressing visual stories of trauma, healing, hope, and gratitude and the significance that making art has, and continues to have, on their lives.
