The Monmouth Museum is committed to providing opportunities for local artists. The New Jersey Emerging Artists Series consists of six annual monthly solo exhibitions to showcase the new work of NJ artists who have not previously held one-person exhibitions in the State. The third artist featured of the 2019 year is Andrew Bencsko III with his exhibition, ex tempore, May 31 – June 30, 2019. The Opening Reception is Friday, May 31, from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at the Monmouth Museum. Admission is Free, open to the public, and refreshments will be served.
“My abstractions stem from observations of heaps of discarded materials and debris during my hectic daily commute through NYC’s streets and subways,” said Bencsko. Andrew Bencsko III, from Rahway, NJ, is an artist/educator, who was trained as a painter, has been teaching graphic design for over nine years at the High School of Art and Design, a Career and Technical Education (CTE) school located in upper midtown Manhattan. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and his Masters of Art Education in Teaching at the School of Visual Arts.
In his work, he seeks to depict the unconventional relationships of different forms and maze-like formations. On the surface, they are excess pieces of lumber, steel frames, and miss-cut studs from construction sites along with broken gypsum board, plastic mwrap, conduit and empty coffee cups. As he paints, he emphasizes not the actual subject matter, but the varying patinas, the lines jutting in and out from incongruent angles deviating the eye to multiple focal points. “As spontaneously as I encounter these subjects and my mind composes them, I paint with the same sense of immediacy, ex tempore – on the spur of the moment, for even the slightest shift in time or space will create a new perspective and that moment is lost,” Bencsko explains.
Bencsko has been recognized as an artist receiving a grant from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and as an educator where he was voted UFT's CTE Teacher of the Year from his colleagues at Art and Design (2013) and was a Top 40 Finalist for the Big Apple Awards Teacher of Excellence (2014).
Andrew’s Gallery Talk is Wednesday, June 5, 2019 from 7:00 – 8:00 pm at the
Monmouth Museum. Admission is free.
