Ferry Runs Aground Off Atlantic Highlands Monday Morning

A commuter ferry carrying passengers bound for Lower Manhattan ran aground about 200 yards offshore Monday morning, the Coast Guard said.

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ — A commuter ferry carrying passengers bound for Lower Manhattan ran aground in Sandy Hook Bay off Atlantic Highlands Monday morning, the U.S. Coast Guard reported.

The ferry ran aground very near to the dock in Atlantic Highlands.

At approximately 7:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11, the Coast Guard was notified that the 140-foot commuter ferry ran aground about 200 yards from the pier in Atlantic Highlands.

There were about 400 people aboard and all passengers were able to afely disembark at the ferry terminal pier. It is not immediately clear what caused the ferry to run aground.

Coast Guard marine investigators and marine inspectors are scheduled to conduct a structural assessment to ensure the integrity of the vessel prior to returning to operations.

No injuries or pollution were reported.
