As of Friday, the four beaches closed by the state are all in Monmouth County.

NEW JERSEY — The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has closed four beaches to drain floodwaters from Tropical Storm Elsa.

As of Friday, the four beaches closed by the state are all in Monmouth County. They are:

  • Monmouth County: Sea Girt borough, "The Terrace" beach
  • Monmouth County: Sea Girt borough, Beacon Blvd. beach
  • Monmouth County, Spring Lake borough, York Avenue beach
  • Monmouth County, Spring Lake Borough, Brown Avenue South beach

This appears to be the first time in summer 2021 the state has had to close any beaches.

Often, certain beaches up and down the New Jersey coast are closed the day after a heavy rain. Heavy rains can cause sewer and storm drain overflows, which can result in higher-than-recommended levels of bacteria in the water.

The state had to open up culverts draining out of Wreck Pond in Spring Lake in anticipation of flooding. Wreck Pond drains into these four beaches and they were closed for safety, said the state DEP on its beach advisory website.
