German Language School-Morris Celebrates 50 Years

More than Oom-Pah-Pah Bands. German Language School Families March in the 61st Annual New York City Steuben Parade

Students from the German Language School of Morris County (http://www.glsmc.org) joined thousands of Dirndl, Lederhosen, Trachten and Karneval-clad groups, music and dance organizations, marching bands, magnificently festooned floats, along with Grand Marshalls Mr. Peter Beyer, Member of the German Bundestag, and Mr. Helmut Jahn, CEO of JAHN Architects, to march in the 61st Annual German-American Steuben Parade on Fifth Avenue, New York City in celebration of more than 300 years of German-American cooperation. The Parade honors the many contributions of America’s largest ethnic group: German-Americans.

“In honor of our 50 years teaching German to thousands of New Jersey students, we joined the parade with a large contingent following our Saturday classes,” said GLSMC Board of Trustee President Thorsten Rosner. “Our students enjoyed walking with friends and family and gained an appreciation for the heritage, music, and groups that have bridged the ocean between Germany and the United States to create a diverse community. It’s in our mission to have our students be prepared for the global community.”

Unlike a standard curriculum that relies on worksheets, lectures and homework, GLSMC teachers encourage speaking, reading and writing through games, interactive skits, videos, crafts, music, and even pop culture to make learning fun.

The school also hosts cultural events throughout the year, with the first fall event scheduled for Saturday, November 3, 2018. Internationally renowned puppeteer Uwe Spillman will bring his hand-crafted puppets and homespun German fairy tales to students in Morristown on his 2018 national United States tour. His free performance is open to the community. The school will also offer programs to celebrate giving and sharing with St. Martin’s Day in November and St. Nicolas in December.

Why German School?

German continues to be a leading language with more than 100 million speakers around the world. The School, which offers classes for both native speakers and language learners, prepares students to take the National German Exam (http://www.aatg.org), administered annually by the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) to more than 20,000 high school students. GLSMC, a Partner School (http://www.pasch-net.de/deindex.htm) with the German Federal Republic’s Agency for German Schools Abroad (ZfA), also prepares students for the German Language Diploma. Students who demonstrate higher levels of comprehension and communication on these exams are eligible to study at universities and technical schools throughout the German-speaking nations of Europe.
