Middletown Man Crashed Motorcycle, Assaulted Officer, Cops Say

A Middletown man crashed a motorcycle as he fled from police, then assaulted the officer who tried to take him into custody, police said.

A Middletown man crashed a motorcycle as he fled from police, then assaulted the officer who tried to take him into custody, police said.

Nicholas J. Lewandowski, 18, of Peach Blossom Lane, in Middletown was charged with Eluding, Hindering Apprehension, Obstructing, Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, and Resisting Arrest. He was also issued motor vehicle summonses charging him with Failure to Possess a Motorcycle License, Operating an Unregistered and Uninsured Vehicle, and various other moving violations.

Shortly after 11 a.m. Sunday, Middletown Officer Thomas Hughes tried to pull over a motorcyclist who was speeding and driving recklessly on Route 35.

But the driver refused to pull over and crashed the bike in a parking lot. Then he ran away.

But Hughes caught up with him, and that’s when the defendant “squared off to fight and proceeded to assault Officer Hughes,” police said.

Holmdel Patrolman David D’Arcy, who was off-duty, happened to be driving by and quickly stopped to help Hughes.

Bail for Lewandowski was set at $60,000 and he was sent to the Monmouth County jail, Freehold Township.
