Special People United to Ride Celebrates Double Anniversaries

SPUR Marks Two Events

Riders, staff and the board at Special People United to Ride (SPUR) have much to celebrate this year as they look back with pride at two milestones.

Forty years ago, on July 9, 1981, Special People United to Ride began a formal partnership with the Monmouth County Park System with Mary Alice Goss, one of the original founders, as Program Director and Head Instructor. The program was located at Thompson Park and later at Huber Woods.

Twenty years ago, staff and board members, eager to grow the program by adding a larger facility with an indoor arena for year-round lessons, successfully mounted a major fundraiser. The vision moved toward reality, and in late 2001 construction on today’s Sunnyside Equestrian Center
home began on the former Neuberger Farm in Middletown, NJ.

Working in conjunction with the Monmouth County Park System, SPUR is a nonprofit 501 (c)

achieve personal goals through therapeutic horsemanship. The Park System’s
Sunnyside Equestrian Center provides a safe environment for students to enjoy
the freedom of riding and handling a horse.
