Gravestone History to Be Explored at Montville Library

A way to memorialize loved ones who have passed, gravestones also serve as history markers, teaching us about the past.

The Montville Township Public Library will be hosting a program this month that explores the meaning behind gravestone art and how to interpret the symbols carved in them.

"Gravestone Art & Symbolism" will be presented by the Wise Owl Workshop on July 31 at 7 p.m. Participants will learn about early New England burial grounds, the first public art galleries in America, and how they were used to explain family history.

"This program from the Wise Owl Workshop will teach you how to interpret gravestone symbols, and how the early slate and sandstone grave markers were carved," the library said in a press release. "Stories of the people the stones commemorate will be shared."
