Joe Huber Running His 118th Marathon

Pine Brook man started running after he quit smoking

Joe Huber, 66, of Pine Brook will be running his 118th marathon this year, heading to Long Island for a race that benefits veterans services.

I ran my first marathon when I was 39 and now at 66 I know there is no better way to feel young and fit than conquering the challenge of 26.2 miles," Huber said.

Catholic Health Services second annual Suffolk County Marathon, Half Marathon and 5k will raise funds for veterans services. Last year's race raised $160,000 for veterans, and drew 3,500 runners from 26 states and four countries.

"I started running after I quit smoking and promptly lost 30 pounds and developed a healthy lifestyle that I have kept to this day," Huber said.

"I coach runners as a hobby and enjoy helping others achieve goals they never thought possible."

This year's race will start and end in Patchogue, and be followed by the Freedom Fest, which will feature foods and wines from Long Island.

Numerous teams are running in the races, as well, raising funds for a group of special needs athletes, to combat cystic fibrosis and to raise awareness of the need for organ donations.
