Montville Business Targets SAT/ACT Prep Needs in Community

With an ACT scheduled for Oct. 26 and SAT for Nov. 2, college testing is on the minds of parents and students alike. 

To address the growing demand, a new business in town is offering tutoring and classes for students. 

Started earlier this year by a Montville mother with two sons in the Montville schools, the Academic Excellence Center is fully comprehensive and addresses students’ academic needs as well as their social and emotional needs.

Located at 2 Changebridge Road Sunday Brooks opened the AEC and said since they're "an organic organization ... we want to adapt to the needs of the community as they are currently. A lot of this growth is because of what we heard from our clients and parents. We’re able to respond to that need and it benefits not only the child in the family but the community as a whole.”

For example, “currently in the works is an SAT/ACT 30-day weekend boot camp, which will meet for three hours on Fridays and Saturdays for students who are pushed for time.”

This fall they also launched new programs, including one SAT/ACT prep. 

This 30-hour comprehensive prep course offers classes are structured on Saturdays for three hours with the final sessions occurring just before the test. Including a review of math, verbal and science (for ACT) content, the program will teach test-taking strategies and three free proctored tests, all in a small class setting. 

Something the community will see a lot more of is college prep.

“Because we're based on the demand in the community, there’s a need for SAT/ACT prep and you have a lot of students with requests for 1-on-1 service in that area,” said Brooks.

She added that parents with students with ADHD have found that “a class setting is not appropriate for children that are struggling with this issue,” so the 1-on-1 tutoring benefits them.

“As we grow, we’ll do the college coaching as well for students,” said Brooks. “They’re obviously thinking of different schools, geographical features, what majors to pick and we’ll help guide them to one that is in line with their skill set.”

Brooks said that many believe that since they live in the area, they are not eligible for financial aid.

“We do partner with a gentleman for the financial aid component. A lot of students in Montville don’t believe they are eligible,” but sometimes because of things that may be going on in their home life, such as divorce, may open the doors to financial aid, said Brooks, adding that the financial aid program “will be growing in the future.”
