Montville Environmental Commission Hosts Documentary Screening

The MEC is continuing it's efforts to bring climate change awareness to Montville with a free screening of A Plastic Ocean on April 7th.

With all the changes in our town's recycling rules, it seems people have a renewed focus on recycling. However, the truth is that recycling is not a good solution as plastic is typically only recycled once before it becomes non-recyclable. Therefore, recycling plastic doesn't stop it from ending up in a landfill - it only slows the timeline. Our reliance on plastic and the vast amount of plastic we bring into our homes is the true problem because that plastic will be around for hundreds of years.

In an effort to encourage people to reduce their plastic footprint, the Montville Environmental Commission is finishing off their Sustainable Living Series with a free documentary screening of A Plastic Ocean, on April 7th, 2pm at the Montville Township Public Library. By 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Microplastics have been found in most of the table salt we eat, the water we drink, and in the fish we eat. The movie examines the severity of the problem and how the issue will only get worse, since we continue to produce and use more and more plastic each year. Come early to grab a free sample kit of Dropps plastic-free detergent, a sample pack of WelDental plastic-free toothpaste tablets, as well as a reusable foldable grocery bag. Simple swaps like these are the first step in addressing the issue of plastic pollution. Following the screening, Montville Environmental Commission member Bansari Shah will outline more easy ways to reduce your plastic footprint and save money at the same time.
