Montville School of Rock holds SOCKS-Giving concert for homeless
Admission is a pair of men's socks to the family friendly rock benefit that includes dinner and a show!
For 2017, the Montville Township High School School of Rock is turning up the juice and dropping the mic to help the homeless of New York City. The annual Rock’s-Giving concert is being renamed SOCKS-Giving, and this year, admission is a pair of new men’s socks.
“Yes! Just one pair of socks is enough to get you dinner and the show! It's a great deal. Right?” said SOR advisor and MTHS teacher Anthony Sia. “Monetary donations will also be accepted, but we are strongly encouraging people to bring new men's socks. The need for socks, especially among homeless men, is critical.”
For more than a dozen years SOR has combined music with service. The students of MTHS SOR practice daily, learning to cover current and classic songs. With a repertoire as extensive as the history of Rock N Roll combined with R&B, Jazz, Rap, Metal, Hip Hop, Blues and Grunge, School of Rock musicians perform vibrant evenings of fan favorites for charity. SOR concerts have raised tens of thousands for Drug Awareness Council, MTHS Prom, area families with unexpected medical bills, Homeless Bus, Inc., and many other organizations and local causes.

SOCKS-Giving 2017 will be held on Tuesday, November 21, 2017. In addition to admission to the 2017 SOCKS-Giving concert, audience members will also receive a complimentary dinner donated by Tuscany Villa.
“Dinner begins in the MTHS cafeteria at 7:15 PM.” Sia noted. “The concert starts at 7:30. However, people can step in and out of the cafeteria for dinner throughout the concert. Dinner will be available all night as long as there is food; which there should be plenty of, thanks to Tuscany Villa.”

The SOCKS-Giving concert begins at 7:30PM. Dinner begins 15 minutes earlier, at 7:15, in the MTHS cafeteria. Admission is a pair of new men’s socks. Monetary donations will also be accepted. All socks and funds received will benefit Homeless Bus, Inc., a Towaco-based non-profit that feeds and clothes over 300 NYC homeless men each week.
Montville School of Rock is a student led group, which also includes alumni. In addition to daily lunch time practice, the students jam after school and on Sundays. Former students often attend practices and performances. Together they learn to cover hits from all genres.
“There is no other club like this,” Sia said. “Where else can musicians at all levels come together and just learn to be great? And, the really great thing is, these kids really work hard both musically, as well as for their community.”
