Montville Students Commended in National Merit Scholarship Program

There were 1.5 million students who took the PSAT/NMSQT this year and about 50,000 with the highest selection Index scores (critical reading, mathematics, writing skills scores) qualified for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program, according to the program’s website.

In September, these high scoring students were notified through their schools that they qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist. Montville HS was proud to announce five semifinalists and recently announced 23 as commended students.

“In late September, more than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the approximately 50,000 high scorers … receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Commended Students are named on the basis of a nationally applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year and is typically below the level required for participants to be named Semifinalists in their respective states. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses,” according to the scholarship program

“Commended students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2014 competition by taking the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT),” said the Montville School District.
