A classic musical story, “Tubby the Tuba” was written in 1946 by composer George Kleinsinger with a story by Paul Tripp.

“It serves as a wonderful introduction to the orchestra, and has become a well-loved children’s classic,” notes New York City’s The Broadway Bach Ensemble’s website.

Tubby is a little tuba who wants to play melodies like all of the other instruments of the orchestra. Because of his low pitch, Tubby mostly plays only “oompah-oompah.” By exploring his abilities, and researching opportunities with bull frogs and others, Tubby learns how to play a wonderful new melody. In the end, the entire orchestra is excited about Tubby’s melody. The instruments join together in harmony to create a rousing new finale.

“’Tubby the Tuba’ is not only a wonderful introduction to musical instruments,” Superintendent Dr. René Rovtar said, “It is also a marvelous story illustrating kindness and self-esteem.”
