“We are excited to once again work with Aerie Pharmaceuticals to bring the St. Paddy’s Day 5K to Morris
Township” says Co-Race Director Heather McDermott. “Whether you’re looking for a well organized
USATF-certified 5K race, or to get some exercise before enjoying the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in
neighboring Morristown, this race is for you.”
“Aerie supports the World Glaucoma Week campaign to raise awareness of Glaucoma and the
importance of having early and regular eye exams to screen for this sight threatening disease” Beth
Schultz Scott of Aerie adds. “The theme of World Glaucoma Week this year is Green = Go Get your eyes
tested for Glaucoma; Save your sight”. The World Glaucoma Week is a major collaboration by the World
Glaucoma Association and the World Glaucoma Patient Association to alert people to have regular eye
(and optic nerve) checks to detect glaucoma earlier, thus contributing to sight preservation. Aerie began
in 2005, after David Epstein, MD, Erik Toone, PhD, and Casey C. Kopczynski, PhD, joined forces. Dr.
Epstein, then chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Duke University, was a long-time clinical
scientist in the glaucoma field. He spent his research career searching for the cure of the disease that
causes irreversible vision loss.
As in the past, this year’s charity partners also include the Police Unity Tour and Morristown High School
Track and Field team. The Police Unity Tour is a bicycle ride from NJ to Washington D.C. to raise
awareness of Law Enforcement Officers who have died in the line of duty and to raise funds for the
National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial and Museum. (www.policeunitytour.com)
