Too Much Lead Found In These Morris Area Drinking Water Sites

A number of N.J. drinking water systems have been cited for having elevated levels of lead within the past four years. See list below.

Too much lead in drinking water isn't just a problem in Flint, Mich.

And in New Jersey, it's a problem not just confined to Newark, where the school district recently announced that elevated lead readings have been found at 30 schools in its jurisdiction.

Indeed, at least 79 additional New Jersey drinking water systems have been cited for having elevated levels of lead within the past four years, according to state Department of Environmental Protection (see list below).

Indeed, on average, about 34 community and smaller private or governmental water systems are cited annually for violating federal action-levels for lead in drinking water, according to annual violation reports of the DEP that were brought to light by NJ Spotlight.

NJ Spotlight and USA Today have identified New Jersey drinking water sites that have violated federal action-levels for lead. Patch backed up the date by going through the DEP's Drinking Water Watch searchable database, where people can see the quality of water in their communities, businesses or schools.

Bob Considine, a DEP spokesman, acknowledged the list and said most of the major lead issues in New Jersey - and in the rest of the country - are the result of leeching of lead from pipes and solder in home and buildings.

"But when we do have issues with public water supplies or private wells, we have the safe guards in place by virtue of EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule that requires these wells and utilities to address those concerns and also publicly notify people who use those sources of those lead issues," he said. "I think from that standpoint, New Jersey has a very good record of private well owners and public utilities addressing lead concerns so they’re not long-term."

None of these drinking water systems come anywhere near Flint, Mich., where lead was measured at upwards to 14,000 pars per billion. The federal safety line is 15 parts per billion, though Considine acknowledged that 600 parts per billion - the highest New Jersey total found out at the Bally's Park Place Casino site in Atlantic City - is still "not good."
