Students from Morristown were among several honored by the Mayo Performing Arts Center as an October Music Student Of The Month for being outstanding wind instrumentalists.

Alex Salamon, a sixth grader at the Peck School, Alyssia Liu, a senior at Villa Walsh Academy, and Sheetal Bangalore, a senior at Morristown, were honored on stage before the Oct. 20 concert at Mayo PAC. All the students were nominated by their teachers and chosen by Mayo PAC's education department. At the end of the year, all honored students will be invited to perform in a recital.

Sheetal is a phenomenal musician and one of the top flautists in the high school band program. She is also an accomplished piccolo player. She has performed in numerous honor bands at the area and region level in addition to participating in the high school wind ensemble, and Tri-M Music Honor Society. She is always looking to take her performance to the next level and is amazing at sharing her talents with the music program and helping the underclassmen in her section.

Here's what Dr. Michele Yampolskyt had to say about Alyssia Liu:

Alyssia is exceptionally talented. She consistently demonstrates musicianship and maturity beyond her years. When she performs, her playing is magical. Alyssia is able to communicate her love for the music, as well as her own unique musical instructs and spirit in her performance. Alyssia's innate musical ability allows her to connect in musically sensitive and expressive ways with others. IN addition to her contributions at Villa Walsh, Alyssia is the principal flautist for the New Jersey Youth Symphony. She was the winner of the NJ Summit Symphony Orchestra Young Virtuoso Concerto Competition in 2018. She has performed at Carnegie Hall, NJPAC, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art as a soloist on flute. In addition, Alyssia was also selected to participate in the National Honor Choir of the American Choral Directors Association in 2017 and has been a member of the NJ All State ACDA Choir for the past four years.

Alex is a fantastic young musician with a lot of talent. Alex's main instrument is the flute. He is a member of the NJ Youth Orchestra, and also will be featured at several events at The Peck School this year. Alex will also serve as flute section leader in The Peck School Band. Alex is smart, funny, curious, energetic, and serious about music. He is also a member of the school's Handbell Choir. Alex brings a high level of musicianship to the music program at Peck, and we are lucky to have him.
