Black Lives Matter Collective To Hold Vigil In Morristown Tonight

Group holds vigil in Morristown Thursday evening in order to stand in unity against violence.

Organizers of Black Lives Matter Morristown will be holding an evening vigil at Cauldwell Playground in Morristown tonight at 8 PM.

Meaghan Wolf and T’Anna Kimbrough, who organized tonight's vigil within the last 48 hours, posted an invitation on their Facebook page. Black Lives Matter Morristown came together as a group during the summer, after the shooting of Philando Castile in St. Anthony, Minnesota.

"We want to attract the black families," Kimbrough said, "There is a lot of interest being shown [on social media] but there are those who don't have social media. It's important being in the presence of that community because a lot of people are hurting right now."

According to Kimbrough, the event is the second public gathering Black Lives Matter Morristown has organized, with the hope of standing together in solidarity with others in protest to recent deaths that occurred in situations involving police officers.

The first Black Lives Matter Morristown event, a march on July 9 in the township from the police station to the courthouse, picked up interest as it processed past busy restaurants in the town's center. By the end of the march, there were 100 people that had participated.

"We will stand in solidarity as we invite anyone to lead us in prayer, and have an open discussion about the reality of racism and injustice in America today," the Facebook invitation says.

Kimbrough explained the decision to hold the vigil at the Cauldwell Playground in Morristown was a strategic decision.
