Craigslist Founder Donates $10K to Morristown Community Garden

Craig Newmark, Morristown High grad, puts money toward compostable toilet, report says.

The Early Street Community Garden, a function of Grow It Green Morristown, is about to get an upgrade in facilities thanks to the founder of one of the Internet’s most used websites.

Craig Newmark, founder of craigslist.com and Morristown High School graduate (class of ’71), has donated $10,000 to the Garden for a composting toilet to be installed at the location, morristowngreen.com reported.

Newmark grew up across the street from the current Garden, the report said, and is contributing his funds to a $200,000 campaign by Grow It Green to expand the facility and its offerings, the report said.

The toilet will be named the Craig Newmark Memorial Latrine No. 2, the report said, and is expected to open next spring.

The Community Garden was founded in 2009 from what was once a littered and vacant lot, and now offers 50 families their own gardening space. The garden has become such a success, a waiting list now has upwards of 75 families, according to the nonprofit’s website.
