'Dangerous' Snow Squalls, 50-MPH Winds Expected In NJ (VIDEOS)

UPDATE: Here is when and where the snow squalls are appearing in NJ, and when more are expected. One crash was reported.

NEW JERSEY – "Dangerous" snow squalls were popping up in New Jersey on Wednesday, and more were expected to arrive, forecasters say (see videos and warnings below).

The National Weather Service issued several warnings for "dangerous snow squalls" during the morning hours, and more may be coming during the afternoon hours.

The NWS has issued a hazardous weather outlook across New Jersey, saying there is the possibility of additional snow squalls on Wednesday afternoon. A rapid and brief reduction in visibility and a quick coating of snow may occur, leading to hazardous travel conditions.

A wind advisory is also in place across the state, saying winds could hit 50 mph, and snow squall warnings were in South Jersey, too. Here is what the National Weather Service is saying:

Perhaps one of the worst squalls happened in South Jersey on Wednesday. This video shows one in Hammonton:

There was one crash, but it's not clear if it had anything to do with the snow squalls.

Here is the forecast (see more videos below):

  • Wednesday afternoon: A slight chance of rain and snow showers before 4 p.m., then a slight chance of snow showers. The snow could be heavy at times. Mostly sunny, with a high near 39. Breezy, with a west wind 22 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 43 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
  • Wednesday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 21. Northwest wind 9 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph.
  • Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 35. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming light and variable in the afternoon.
  • Thursday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 27. South wind 3 to 7 mph.
  • Friday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 51. Southwest wind 8 to 11 mph.
  • Friday night: A slight chance of showers after 1am. Patchy fog. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 45. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.
  • Saturday: A chance of showers. Patchy fog. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 64. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent.
  • Saturday night: Showers. Patchy fog. Low around 56. Breezy. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent.
  • Sunday: A chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 64. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent.

Here is what the National Weather Service was saying on Wednesday:

  • A dangerous snow squall was located over Basking Ridge, or near Morristown, moving east at 55 mph.
  • A snow squall warning was in effect for I-95 and US-40 near Vineland.
  • A squall also was spotted near Newark.

Other areas, including Central and South Jersey, were under the warnings as well.

Gusty winds up to 55 mph also occurred, and tree damage and power outages remain possible.
