Lifelong Morristown Man, Former Police Chief Dies At 84

Carl Hyde was a member of Morristown High School's class of 1950.

MORRISTOWN, N.J. – Carl Hyde lived his life honestly, with respect for others and integrity.

The lifelong Morristown and Morris Township resident and former police chief died recently at the age of 84.

Hyde was born in Morristown and graduated Morristown High School in 1950. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served four years during the Korean Conflict, with most of his time stations in the Mediterranean aboard the US DJ Buckley and DDD 808 as a quartermaster. He received an honorary discharge and volunteered four more years of inactive duty.

Hyde married the love of his life, Lois Ann Erickson, on July 10, 1955 in the Morris Plains Presbyterian Church, where he became a member for the remainder of his life.

Hyde spent 27 and-a-half years on the Morris Township Police Department, holding every rank up until his retirement in 1984 as Police Chief. He also attended the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

Hyde is survived by his wife, Lois, two daughters, two grandchildren, and his Pomeranian, Bubba.

A celebration of Carl’s life will be held Wednesday, Feb. 3 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Doyle Funeral Home on Maple Avenue in Morristown. A celebration of resurrection will be held Thursday, Feb. 4 at 10 a.m. at Morris Plains Presbyterian Church. Memorial donations may be made to the Morris Plains/Morris Township/Morristown Meals on Wheels program.
