Longtime Morristown Teacher, Coach Dies At 83
Joseph Dempsey graduated as a Colonial in 1950.

MORRISTOWN, N.J. – Joseph Dempsey was as Morristown as they come.
The longtime high school teacher and coach died recently at age 83.
Dempsey was born in Morristown and lived in Flanders until he was 13 years old, then moved to Morristown and graduated from the high school in 1950.

Dempsey went on to become an Aerographer Mate 2nd class in the United States Navy from 1952 to 1956. After graduating with a Master’s degree in history from Seton Hall University, Dempsey taught at his Morristown alma mater from 1959 to 1992.
He taught both history and English classes there, along with coaching track and football.

Dempsey wrote three American history teachers’ additions with Silver Burdett Publishing Company and during his retirement wrote “Tales Of Our Heritage” and “The Harder the Conflict.”
Dempsey is survived by his wife Audrey, of 61 years; six children; seventeen grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
