Morristown Mayor Speaks Out On Atlanta, Boulder Shootings

MORRISTOWN, NJ — In the wake of two major mass shootings, Morristown officials said they're grieving with the people of Atlanta and Boulder, Colorado. Morristown Mayor Tim Dougherty released a statement on the attacks which killed a combined 18 people, stating that "our strength as a nation lies in our diversity."

"We have a wonderful home here in Morristown," Dougherty said, joined by Police Chief Darnell Richardson and Public Safety Director Michael Corcoran. "It has been my honor to be your mayor and I am proud to represent a town and community as vibrant, diverse and warm as this one. Morristown is my home, too, which is why I know there is no place for violence and hatred in Morristown."

A suspect faces 10 counts of murder after the Boulder grocery store shooting left 10 dead. Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, of Arvada — near Denver — was arrested Monday afternoon. A motive for the shootings wasn't immediately known.

Last week in metro Atlanta, a gunman opened fire at three massage parlors, according to authorities. Robert Aaron Long admitted to the killings and blamed sex addiction. Although many of the victims are of Asian descent, local officials haven't determined whether the killings were racially motivated.
