UPDATE: Fighter Jets Dispatched To Investigate Small Plane Flying Over Morris County
A small plane without authorization was flying over air space restricted due to United Nations assemblies in New York.
Many sources called the Morris County Communications Center this morning to report what sounded, and looked, like low-flying jets over Morris County. The Morris County Office of Emergency Management announced that there were indeed jets flying in the airspace above Morris County, but these jets had been ordered into the area by the North American Aerospace Defense Command to divert a single engine aircraft that was about to enter restricted air space.
Air space was deemed temporarily restricted as a result of United Nations meetings being held in New York City. The Air Force F-15 jets were already in the air, as is standard practice during United Nations.
"This morning, a small aircraft entered the temporary flight-restricted area 10 miles north of Morristown," FAA spokesperson Jim Peters told the the Daily Record. "That's why you saw the jet."
