Workers Soon Entitled To Paid Sick Leave In Morristown

Morristown is New Jersey's 13th municipality requiring private employers to provide paid sick time to employees.

Joining 12 other municipalities in New Jersey, Morristown will soon require paid sick leave for employees in the private sector, according to an ordinance passed last week by the Morristown Town Council.

According to the ordinance, employers in the private sector staffed with more than 10 employees must provide 40 hours of paid sick leave during a calendar year for each employee beginning on October 4 of this year. If staffed with under 10 employees, employers must allow workers 24 hours of sick paid leave.

The employees of these private sector companies in Morristown must work at least 80 hours within a calendar year in order to be eligible for the benefits, according to Ordinance No. 35-2016. Each eligible employee can accrue sick time at the rate of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked, according to the language in the ordinance.
