Babysitter Charged After Girl, 4, Left Home Alone Dies
Naira Bennett was found unresponsive Wednesday morning in a Newark apartment and later died at the hospital.
The babysitter of a 4-year-old girl who died when she and three other small children were left alone Wednesday in a Bradley Court apartment, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said.
Sakita Covington, 38, of Newark, has been charged with four counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of aggravated assault, both second-degree crimes.
According to the prosecutor's office, police responded to 56 North Munn St. at about 10:45 a.m. Wednesday for a report of an unresponsive child. The girl, identified as Naira Bennett, was transported to University Hospital where she died at 7:11 p.m. Wednesday, the prosecutor's office said.
The cause and manner of death are pending an autopsy.
Covington is being held at the Essex County Jail.
