Bad Weather In Newark, Forecasters Say: Snow, School, Airport

Newark is preparing for an early winter storm that's predicted to hit towns across New Jersey.

NEWARK, NJ — Bad weather may be on the way, forecasters say. And Newark is preparing for an early winter storm that’s predicted to hit towns across New Jersey.

In some parts of the state, forecasters are calling for as much as a foot of snow on Monday and early Tuesday. The predictions for Newark were more modest: about 1 or 2 inches before noon and 2 to 4 inches Monday night, according to city officials.

The Newark Department of Public Safety issued the following weather advisory on Monday morning:

“Today, rain is expected before noon followed by rain and snow with accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible. Snow is predicted for tonight, mainly before midnight, with new accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.Tuesday, a 20 percent chance of snow is expected before 10 a.m.

“All residents are asked to observe the city’s ‘No Parking on Snow Covered Roads’ regulations due to the expected snowfall. Signs have been posted on streets throughout the City of Newark to notify motorists of the streets designated for no parking during snow storms. Motorists and residents are urged to look for the sign [pictured at the bottom of this article] to identify the streets where the parking ban will be enforced.

“Violators can expect to be issued a summons and towed. These regulations are essential to the removal/plowing of snow and salting operations and to allow emergency vehicles to pass. Whenever possible, off-street parking is recommended during snow storms. That may mean partnering with a neighbor to use their driveway.

“All residents are reminded that tossing snow into the street is against the law, and violators will be fined.

“Whenever snow has fallen and the accumulation is such that it covers the street or highway is provided below. No vehicle shall be parked on the following main traveled or major roadways or portions thereof:

Newark city officials recommended that local businesses begin sending people home between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

“We want to avoid the congestion that can make the afternoon commute frustrating and dangerous for drivers,” Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said.

Newark officials reminded residents that there are emergency shelters operating during the extreme cold weather that have partnered with the city to provide overnight sheltering. For more information about sheltering services, contact the shelters listed below or the Department of Health and Community Wellness, Division of Social Services at (973) 877– 9481, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

SCHOOLS

Newark public schools had an early dismissal on Monday, administrators said.

“Due to inclement weather on Monday, December 2, the Newark Public Schools will have an early dismissal at 1 p.m. with after school activities cancelled. Please plan accordingly. Central Office will remain open following regular hours of operation.”

AIRPORT

Newark Liberty International Airport saw delays on Sunday due to weather in the region, officials said.

As of Monday morning, departure and arrival delays at the airport were 15 minutes or less, according to the FAA Air Traffic Control System Command Center.
