Booker to Lead Rutgers Panel on Student Debt

Sen. Booker to participate on panel at Rutgers Newark campus. The panel will now be held at University Square.

Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), who co-sponsored a bill to simplify the process of applying for college financial aid, will lead a Rutgers Newark panel on student debt at the Rutgers Newark campus at noon.

The panel, entitled, “The Merits of Student Debt Legislation: What is the Role of the Federal Government?” will include members of the Rutgers-Newark debate team and other Rutgers students.

The panel, originally set for the Paul Robeson Campus Center, has been moved to University Square, at 155 University Avenue.

Booker’s new proposed legislation is called the FAST Act, and is designed to discourage over-borrowing, let students use PELL grants year around and discourage overborrowing.

In the last Congress, he co-sponsored the Bank on Students Emergency Loan Refinancing Act, which would allow students refinance federal loans.
