Decorated Newark Cop Unexpectedly Passes Away, Community Mourns

Jerome Ramsey, 55, a 30-year veteran of the Newark Police Department, passed away suddenly of natural causes, authorities say.

NEWARK, NJ — The Newark community and police department are mourning the unexpected passing of local resident Jerome Ramsey, a 30-year veteran of the Newark Police Department.

Ramsey, 55, passed away suddenly on Saturday of “natural causes,” according to the Newark Department of Public Safety.

Ramsey was most recently assigned to the Major Crimes Division’s Shooting Intelligence Unit and was awarded the prestigious Chief’s Award for outstanding police work on May 25.

Newark Chief of Police Darnell Henry described Ramsey as “a well-respected member of the Newark Police Division who will always be fondly remembered.”

“Sgt. Ramsey embodied the characteristics we look for in every officer: honesty, bravery and compassion,” Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said. We lost a great cop who will definitely be missed.”
