‘Deplorable Conditions’ At Illegal Rooming House In Newark

Newark city inspectors allegedly found no running water and "vermin infestation" at the house, which was illegally converted to 7 rooms.

NEWARK, NJ — Newark fire inspectors and code enforcement officers shut down an illegal “rooming house” in the city last week after receiving complaints about “deplorable conditions” at the three-story home, authorities say.

Newark city officials inspected a home at 854 South 14th Street on Friday, finding faulty electrical wiring, no running water and vermin infestation. The single-family structure had also been illegally converted with seven rooms, according to the Newark Department of Public Safety.

The building was immediately closed in response to the alleged violations, which “posed health and safety hazards to its occupants,” Newark authorities said.

The property’s seven adults and three children were referred to the YMCA for temporary shelter. One adult male refused assistance, authorities said.
