NEWARK, NJ – The police brutality protests that continue to spread across the nation in honor of the 46-year-old George Floyd, who died while being apprehended by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin on May 25th were on full display in the Newark community this weekend as thousands of activists took to Market Street to show their support.

The New Jersey Devils organization, which has already established a reputation of giving back to Newark, has reasserted its commitment today in a statement denouncing racism, prejudice and injustice faced by the black community.

On Sunday evening, the Devils issued the following statement:

The racism, prejudice and injustice faced by the black community and people of color is unacceptable and has no place in our society. We must take it upon ourselves to support one another and strive towards greater accountability.

The only way we will be able to address these important issues is to work together as a unified community and commit to the change that must happen.

We understand that the New Jersey Devils and Prudential Center are important communal assets and we are committed to using that stature to promote meaningful changes in our communities and in our country.

Prior to the recent racial tensions over the last month, the Devils have made their presence in the community know, especially over the last five years. From its donation of an outdoor hockey rink to Newark's Philips Academy to the launch of a five-part mural series in each of the city's five wards, the New Jersey organization has made giving back to the community a top priority.

During a time of tragedy, the ongoing commitment to efforts in a need for action weigh heavily on the fabric of the American society. In order for the healing process to start, it is important for us all to stick together in the fight against racial injustices.
