Free Newark Pet Clinic Reborn, Holds Grand Opening In Ironbound
The Newark Community Healthy Pet Clinic offers free vet services to local pet owners who make less than $20,000 per year.
NEWARK, NJ — A much-needed, no-cost community pet clinic is back in action in Newark.
Last month, the Newark Community Healthy Pet Clinic (NCHPC) held its first day of service since June 2017. The clinic – which is staffed by volunteers and runs solely on donations – provides preventative care for dogs and cats owned by Newark residents who make less than $20,000 per year.

Together, the team offers much-needed pet services such as:
- rabies and distemper vaccines
- heartworm testing
- felv/fiv testing
- deworming
- heartworm and flea and tick prevention
- microchipping (when available)
The NCHPC launched in January 2016, originally operating out of a converted warehouse on New York Avenue in Newark. But its staff soon found themselves without a home base due to the sale of the property in June 2017.

In 2018, the clinic reported that it’d found a new location on Clinton Avenue. But that plan fell through, leaving the animal welfare clinic without a home again, President to the Board Lynn Woodcock told Patch earlier this week.
But you can’t keep a good clinic down, it seems.
On July 21, the NCHPC held a grand reopening at the Ironbound Community Center at 432 Lafayette Street. (See above photos)
For now, it’s operating one Sunday a month. The remaining 2019 clinic dates will take place on Aug. 18, Sept. 22, Oct. 20, Nov. 17 and Dec. 15.
Participants can bring a maximum of two pets per owner each time they visit the clinic. Appointments are scheduled with dogs in the morning and cats in the afternoon.
Pet owners have to bring copies of their yearly income, such as W-2 forms, income tax returns, reward letters or paychecks. Clinic visitors also need to bring a copy of their ID and records of any previous vaccinations, and are welcome to bring a suggested donation of $20 per pet.
Appointments can be made by contacting appointment.nchpc@gmail.com or 973-722-8320.
