LGBTQ Center Asks Newark To ‘Imagine’ During Virtual Fundraiser
The Newark LGBTQ Community Center got a hand from some high-profile guests during its first virtual fundraiser.
NEWARK, NJ — A volunteer-run “safe space” in the Newark LGBTQ community recently held its first virtual fundraiser, with the help of guests including U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Maplewood Deputy Mayor Dean Dafis, Rev. Janyce Jackson Jones and Perez Hilton.
The Newark LGBTQ Community Center shared footage from its “Can You Imagine” gala, which took place on April 22 (watch the video here, and see the program here).
According to its website, the center is a community-based organization committed to providing advocacy, services and a safe, inclusive space that supports the well-being of the LGBTQ+ community and its allies in the Newark area.

During the virtual fundraiser, the center recapped some of the past year’s achievements with the help of hosts, Harmonica Sunbeam and Pastor Kevin Taylor. The center paid tribute to Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver with its “Ally Award.”
