5-Hour Delays At Newark Airport Due To Weather

A stormy Tuesday caused lengthy delays for commuters at Newark Liberty International Airport, officials said.

NEWARK, NJ — A stormy Tuesday caused delays that averaged more than five hours for commuters at Newark Liberty International Airport, officials said. Travelers flying through Newark Airport should allow extra time and contact their airlines, according to a Port Authority alert issued at 12:32 p.m.

There was a weather/thunderstorm-related Traffic Management Program in effect for arrivals in Newark that caused delays averaging five hours and 10 minutes, the FAA's Air Traffic Control System Command Center stated.

LaGuardia Airport also saw weather-related delays, Port Authority officials said.

In a separate alert, Newark city officials reported that due to Tuesday’s heavy rainfall, many streets were expected to flood and should be avoided.

According to city officials, the following locations should be avoided:

  • Clay Street and McCarter Highway
  • South Street and Van Buren Street
  • Jefferson and Chestnut Streets
  • State Street near Broad Street
  • Jabez and Backus Streets
  • 357 Wilson Avenue
  • Manufacturers Place and Hyatt Street
  • Magazine Street and Avenue L
  • Avenue L and Wilson Avenue
  • Ferry and Foundry Streets
  • Norfolk Street
  • Orange Street
  • Nesbitt Street
  • McClellan and Frelinghuysen Avenue, and
  • Frelinghuysen Avenue and the Route 21 underpass
