Newark Gets Greener: Dozens Of Trees Planted In Weequahic Park
Dozens of extra trees are now growing in Weequahic Park thanks to a community effort.

NEWARK, NJ — Dozens of extra red bud and oak trees are now growing in Weequahic Park, thanks to a recent effort to “restore historic Weequahic Park one tree at time.”
Earlier this month, the NJ Tree Foundation, TD Bank and Essex County workers teamed up for a tree-planting in the county-run park in Newark, adding more than 30 trees to the local landscape.
During the Oct. 13 event, employee volunteers from bank joined the NJ Tree Foundation and local community members as part of “TD Tree Days,” a community-based program that nurtures and expands urban forests and green spaces.

Since 2010, more than 285,000 trees and shrubs have been planted in Canada, the U.S., the United Kingdom and Luxembourg through TD Tree Days, according to a news release from the bank.
“The Newark project will allow the NJ Tree Foundation to plant new trees along the jogging path and in open space in Weequahic Park, as well as maintain the new trees,” TD Bank stated. “The pathway connects sports fields to playground and parking areas, and will provide shade for people exercising along the path and those walking the path to get to park destinations.”
