Newark Storm Floods Several Local Roads, Strands Motorists

NEWARK, NJ — Was your street one of several in Newark that flooded during Monday’s storm?

Newark public safety workers spent the night responding to burglar alarms, flooding conditions, power outages and other weather related incidents through the combined use of police, fire and Office of Emergency Management personnel, city officials stated.

But one of the worst issues created by the storm was street flooding, officials said.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, several local roadways flooded due to the heavy rainfall, stranding motorists “at many locations” after they allegedly attempted to drive through high water.

On Monday, officials recommended that the following locations should be avoided, because “flooding conditions exist or the potential for flooding exists”:

  • Clay Street and McCarter Highway
  • South Street and VanBuren Street
  • Jefferson and Chestnut Streets
  • State Street near Broad Street
  • Jabez and Backus Streets
  • 357 Wilson Avenue
  • Manufacturers Place and Hyatt Street
  • Magazine Street and Avenue L
  • Avenue L and Wilson Avenue
  • Ferry and Foundry Streets
  • Norfolk Street
  • Orange Street
  • Nesbitt Street
  • McClellan and Frelinghuysen Avenue
