NJ Supreme Court Rules On Newark Charter School Expansions

The New Jersey Supreme Court upheld a decision that paved the way for the expansion of seven charter schools in Newark.

NEWARK, NJ — The New Jersey Supreme Court has upheld a decision by state officials that paved the way for the expansion of seven Newark charter schools in 2016.

On Tuesday, the court rejected a challenge from the Education Law Center, a Newark-based nonprofit, which argued that the expansion would impact funding for the Newark Public School District and “exacerbate segregation” among students.

The justices wrote that it would be “impractical and unfair” to revisit the decision made by the New Jersey’s education commissioner five years ago, and that it could “disrupt the educations of thousands of students in Newark’s charter schools.”
