NEWARK, NJ — A NJ Transit engineer has earned a nod of appreciation from PETA for saving the life of a small dog found on the railroad tracks in Newark last month.

Last week, PETA announced that it awarded Anthony Guzman a “Compassionate Action Award” for acting quickly to rescue a pooch named Daisy after he spotted her on the tracks ahead of his train on Feb. 19.

After stopping the train and coaxing the pup to safety, Guzman took her to the Secaucus station, and his colleagues were able to take her to a veterinarian and later reunite her with her family, PETA stated.

"Anthony Guzman's kindness and quick thinking meant the difference between life and a painful death for this little dog," PETA Vice President Colleen O'Brien said. "PETA hopes his story will inspire people everywhere to keep an eye out for animals in need and do whatever it takes to get them to safety."

PETA reminded all dog guardians to keep their animal companions near them on walks using a leash and a comfortable, secure harness and to keep a close eye on them when they're outdoors.

Guzman—a 17-year NJ Transit veteran—will receive a framed certificate, a letter of congratulations, and a box of vegan cookies, PETA stated.
