“Before the COVID crisis, 78 percent of Newarkers lived in neighborhoods at risk of displacement,” organizers said. “After six months of uncertain circumstances, many families are unable to pay rent and depend on free food distributions. As we enter the winter heating season, the financial crunch will only get worse.”

“Many residents have been out of work for six months,” said Janise Afolo, president of the Pavilion Tenants’ Association. “Seniors have lost part-time work or are afraid to work because of COVID-19. Unless the government helps, there will be mass evictions when the moratorium ends.”

Freedom Bremner, president of the Colonnade Residents Coalition, struggled like many other musicians and artists at the start of the pandemic.

“I was fortunate to receive unemployment and found some work,” Bremner said. “But good luck is not a plan. Many of my colleagues are struggling and will not be able to stay in their homes without a safety net.”
