N.J. Red Cross Honors MLK Day With Free Smoke Alarms In Newark
Red Cross is partnering with fire departments and community organizations to help families be better prepared for and prevent home fires.

From Red Cross: To help reduce the number of home fire-related injuries and fatalities, the American Red Cross launched the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign in New Jersey and across the county. The Red Cross is partnering with municipalities, fire departments and community organizations to help families be better prepared for, and take important steps to, prevent home fires. To date, Red Cross and partners have installed more than 16,000 free smoke alarms in New Jersey homes in high fire-risk areas throughout the state.
As part of the campaign, the City of Newark, the Newark Fire Department, and Newark Office of Emergency Management have partnered with the Red Cross. The partners, along with volunteer groups from corporations and organizations, will participate in this Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service event to honor the life of Dr. King. Firefighters and volunteers will be going door-to-door, installing free smoke alarms and providing fire safety information as they visit approximately 1,700 homes in neighborhoods within Newark’s West, Central and South Wards.
The Home Fire Campaign canvassing event in Newark will be part of the American Red Cross nationwide effort to install 15,000 smoke alarms in homes as part of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service activities across the country.
